Roughty
This circuit takes its name from the Roughty (pronounced rook-ti) river which flows through the Kilgarvan valley to Kenmare. Leave Kenmare on the N71 towards Glengarriff crossing the Suspension Bridge.
Kenmare Post Office – You should follow the signs for Glengariff at this point.
Cross the suspension bridge
Turn left onto the side road – You will have passed the junction of the Castletownbere road on the right. The road rises slightly and then a side road to the left is sign posted for the Sheen Falls hotel. Take this road.
Pass the Sheen Falls Hotel on the left.
Sheen Bridge – Cross the narrow bridge over the Sheen River and bear left afterwards.
Roughty Bridge – Cross the Roughty Bridge with it’s famous salmon pool beneath. A look into the pool is sometimes rewarded with a view of salmon waiting to make their journey upriver.
Gortagass – Rejoin the busy Kenmare – Kilgarvan road here. There is no footpath on this section of road so remember to remain on the right hand side of the road for safety.
Killowen – The footpath re-appears at this point. Continue back to town.
